Tips for Athletes & Those Supporting Them - In The South West
9 February 2013

SWAS FOUNDATION ELECTIVES Workshop, 9th February 2013

story by Amber Bradley

A very well-behaved & studious team of 15 attended the Developing Champions workshop in the South West (Bunbury) on Saturday, 9 February 2013.

Athletes from a variety of sports, including, Australian Rules Football, Soccer, Cricket, Surfing, BMX, Athletics, Hockey and Tennis were amongst the 14-18 year olds.

The brains behind the Developing Champions curriculum, Kate Bobridge, and I covered the five elective topics (including Communication; Me, You, Everyone; Mental Skills for My Performance and Managing My Body and A Positive Me) with the group, as well as a Review of the Core Units & some Performance Planning – very important in making some specific plans to achieve your goals!

To finish off, Kate and I presented the final topic of the day – Supporting My Athlete – to quite a large and interested group of some of the athletes’ parents. Anyone involved in sport knows just what a large role parents play in, especially junior, athletes’ development – from transport to emotional and nutritional support. Hopefully they also feel like there is some new information available to them to assist them with their journey as an athlete parent.

I think everyone involved; parents, presenters and athletes alike, went away with new knowledge and new skills to enhance our lives, both in and out of sport.

All the best to the young athletes from the South West!

The athletes learn some communication tips & have a few laughs along the way!
