Basketball – A morning spent among some gentle giants.

Basketball WA Foundation Elective workshop: 26 October 2014; Basketball WA Stadium
Story by Kate Beveridge (West Coast Fever, WAIS Netball program)
Today’s session with the up and coming stars of the basketball world was a very pleasant one indeed. Not only were the guy and gals involved extremely receptive for an early Sunday morning but for once I felt among my own. With many of the bright youngsters pipping me at the post in the height stakes I was more than happy to share some of the oxygen…up there.
The group of both country and metro athletes spent the next couple of hours upskilling themselves and learning some extremely valuable mental and communication skills. The value of these skills was not lost amongst the group with nearly all identifying how important mental skills and communication was to perform at their best. However after a quick poll only 10% of the group was actively engaging these skills on a weekly basis.
The session was quite interactive with Jesse Phillips - Lead Facilitator putting the youngsters through their paces in a number of fun communication games. Blinded folded obstacles courses and role model celebrity heads to only name a couple.   All fun and games aside the group learnt the value of mental imagery, positive self-talk, the pros and cons of social media and personal branding.
Today’s session was a positive reminder to all that gold winning performances are not made from raw talent alone but from the hard work put in by the athlete both mentally and physically. As remote WA athletes we don’t want to just be a big fish in a little pond but a big fish in an even bigger pond.
