Cycling workshop: Where is your finish line? How will you get there?
13 June 2015
Foundation Core, Cycling workshop. 13 June 2015, Department Sport & Recreation.
story by Olivia Vivian, Gymnast, 2008 Olympics, 2014 Commonwealth Games, multiple World Championships
It's tough to reveal a goal out loud. We think about them all the time, but there's something about saying it out loud that makes it real. For the cycling group this was one of their tasks in today's workshop.
It was incredibly interesting hearing from all forms of cycling including BMX, Mountain Biking and Cycling (track and road) and listening to all the different on and off track/road goals these guys have. Each form of cycling will have similar but different paths to trek down, but what was important was to make these athletes have a focus goal at the end of the tunnel, with smaller process goals along the way.
By making them write out their goal we have already increased the probability of that goal coming true. By saying it out loud further increases those odds. By saying it in front of other people makes it more likely, and then we informed today's members that choosing an accountability partner will give you the highest probability of reaching that goal. That means, it is important to share that goal with someone who is going to keep you on tack, ask you how you are going, motivate you when you need it.
Who will that person be? For most athletes today, it was the first time they've clearly thought about and written out their goals. We can only hope they continue to remind them self daily of why they do the sport they love!
