WAIS scholarship holder Trent Mitton has scored a hattrick in the Kookaburras 17-0 win over hockey minnows Fiji in their opening Oceania Cup match in New Zealand.

The Australians needed just four minutes to take the led, after Blake Govers converted a penalty stroke, which set the trend for a first half onslaught from the world champions, with half time reached with a 9-0 scoreline.

Mitton opened his account in the 11th minute, before adding additional penalty corner goals in the 37th and 53rdminutes as the Aussies sauntered to a comfortable double figures win.

Mitton was joined in the match, by fellow WAIS athletes Tyler Lovell, Tristan Clemons, Fergus Kavanagh and Aran Zalewski.

The Australians face a much sterner challenge in their second match, against hosts New Zealand on Thursday.

In other hockey news, WAIS athlete Aleisha Power represented the Jillaroos in their opening test match with Argentina, with the match ending in a 3-3 draw.

The Argentine hosts opened up a 2-0 lead only for Australia to storm back into contention and take a 3-2 advantage heading into the final quarter. Argentina capitalised on a breakaway opportunity with three minutes remaining to earn a stalemate, with the second test set to be contested on Wednesday.
