Swimming WA: Foundation Elective Workshop

23 July 2016, Department of Sport and Recreation
Story by Jaime Roberts, WAIS and Canoeing Australia Athlete
On Saturday Heather and I presented one of the first new modules for the Developing Champions Workshop.  The new format was smooth flowing and covers some very important areas for athlete development, including Goal Setting, Time Management, What it means to be a Champion and Integrity in Sport.

Time management is a key area for development for swimmers as they have long days during the week, some beginning at 4am and finishing around 9pm.  Scheduling in recovery and down-time is just as important as training and school activities and finding time for this can be a challenge.

An interesting topic was Sporting Integrity, amidst recent media regarding the Russian doping scandal.  This had the athletes thinking about what they value in sport and how they would like to be seen.  Talking about doping in sport and what ASADA/ WADA do, helps these athletes prepare for their future in International competitions.

Swimming WA is looking the goods over the next few years leading into Tokyo 2020 and beyond. I wish them all the best in their future endeavours.
