Syncho Swimming Foundations Workshop

20 January 2017, DSR
Story by Luke Zaccaria, WAIS Sprint Cyclist

On the 20th January London Olympian Jesse Phillips and myself took a young, talented group of WA Synchronized Swimmers for their first Developing Champions workshop: Foundations for my Success.

The girls were shy at first and this being my first workshop since joining the developing champions program, Jesse got us to do an ice breaking exercise in which the girls had to name a sport using every letter of the alphabet. Sure enough this got the girls vocal and enthusiastic which set the tone for an enjoyable seminar.

The Foundations for My Success workshop covers the key areas of goal planning and progression, time management, importance of sleep and recovery also integrity in sport.

We did a group goal setting exercise using breath holds, which is an important part of Synchronized swimming whilst preforming their routines.  We used the SMARTER method to come up with a goal of 25 seconds by February and 30 seconds by April to improve their work capacity while in competition.

It was great to be a part of the Developing Champions workshop and pass on my knowledge and experiences as a way of giving back to WA sport, which has given me so many valuable lessons.  I look forward to seeing these Synchronized Swimmers achieve their goals in the near future.
