Albany, on the Road to Rio

GSSTA Foundations of My Success Workshop

4th July 2016, Albany
Story by Brant Garvey, WAIS Athlete and 2016 Rio Paralympian

On the 4th of July 2016 I got to fly back to my hometown, 61 days before competing in Rio, and be a part of delivering the Foundation for My Success workshop to young athletes from Denmark and Albany.

I shared a bit of my story of growing up in this country town and being able to make it all the way to the Paralympics. Then sports psychologist, Adrian Schonfeld, spoke about the mental side of sport and life. I was able to relate to the young athletes and their parents who all have to travel huge distances to complete.

This workshop covered areas like sporting commitment, prioritisation, goal setting, integrity, organisation and time management in sport, which I even took a few tips home about.

I love seeing the discipline that these athletes have at such a young age, like Matt Leary and Nina Smith with basketball.

I can’t wait to be a part of future Developing Champions workshops in Albany.

Keep up the hard work!
