Football West Performance Psychology Workshop

6th June 2017, DSR
Story by Luke Zaccaria, WAIS Sprint Cyclist

With only 6 weeks until the U/19 Football West girls compete at their national championships in Canberra, this was the perfect time for Heather and myself to run the girls through the Performance Psychology component of the Developing Champions program.

We first learnt about the developing adolescent brain and how it doesn’t fully develop until the age of 25. While all the girls are between the ages of 14-18, their brains are still in the early stages of development, which means their decisions are very emotionally driven and we discussed what impact that could have on their decisions while playing a game.

We then covered the topic of introverts and extroverts and how the two-personality types differ from each other. We then explored this topic further about how they can complement one another and the dynamic it can create within a team environment. I also shared a story about my own experience being an introvert and how I used that to my advantage.

With the session coming to a close around 8pm and the girls having had a full day of schooling and training we finished off with some progressive muscle relaxation (PMR), which is the perfect way to unwind after a long day, and a great tool to use in day–to–day life as well as calming the nerves before a big game.

The girls showed a great sense of team culture and maturity beyond their years, which will no doubt give them great success in the future.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time, sharing my experiences and passing on my knowledge with them. I wish them all the best for their national championships and hope to one day see them playing for the Matildas.
