Equestrian WA Foundations Workshop

5th July 2017, State Equestrian Centre
Story by Luke Zaccaria, WAIS Sprint Cyclist

It was a wet and stormy morning on the 5thof July, but that didn’t dampen the spirits of the Equestrian West athletes as they joined Joe McCarthy and myself for their introduction into the Developing Champions program with Foundations for my Success.

In this module of the workshop series we go over what the Developing Champions program has to offer. More specifically today we covered the topicsof goal planning and progression, time management, the importance of sleep for recovery and integrity in sport.

We began by watching the inspirational story of Derek Redmond who was favoured to win the men’s 400m track and field event, before tearing his hamstring off the bone mid-race. His father jumped the fence to help his son finish the race, the image of Derek limping around the track with his father shows the importance of perseverance and determination when you face adversity.

We then spent some time working on their weekly schedules, so the athletes can see how their week is structured and what consumes most of their time. This is a great tool for them to see how they can better manage their time if need be or see where they have free time during the week.

It was a great morning working with these athletes; their involvement and interest shown throughout the morning was great! This is what makes it rewarding, being able to give back to the sports community and help the up and coming athletes.
