Football West: Communication Workshop

1st May 2018, Gibbney Reserve
Story by Georgia Wilson, Hockeyroo.

The welcoming greeting from unfamiliar faces made it quickly clear that a great session lay ahead when female athletes from football west gathered for their Developing Champions communication session. Despite the session beginning late on a Tuesday night, the girls displayed nothing less than an enthusiastic attitude and an extreme willingness to learn.

The night began with athletes explaining their perceptions of how important it is to demonstrate respect to officials and umpires and what factors may contribute to moments of weakness and disrespect. Observing several short videos by top performing athletes and sports team who failed to uphold ethics during stressful situations reminded the group of how conscious effort is necessary in order to remain in control. Players brainstormed ways in which they can show respect to teammates, parents and opposition and discuss how they can treat one another.

Social media was a hot topic amongst the group, with players learning about the importance of online safety and privacy setting when using popular platforms such as Instagram and Facebook. Finally, the evening concluded with explaining the necessity of communicating prior to schools and coaches when additional time is needed for assessments due to sporting commitments and potential travels. The session was interactive and the girls were engaged throughout the entire duration of the presentation, making it one of my favourite developing champion workshops of all time.
