WA Squash State Junior Team Win the Australian Junior Championships for the first time

Story by Sue Hillier, WA Squash

The WA team was made up of 24 players from Exmouth to Esperance and in between, some of them coped better than others with the heat at the Darwin Squash Centre. 9 members of the team have completed the Developing Champions Workshop and used their knowledge to help them throughout this tournament. The team Management avoided the words ‘winning & losing’ and focused on player attitude, being good sports and role models.

After playing each State throughout the week it came down to the last day between WA and Queensland, both undefeated to decide who would take home the title of Australian Junior Teams Champions.

Could WA stop the 14 year winning streak by Queensland?

The U13s went first with WA taking that tie 3-1. The U15s was close with 2 matches each, WA losing on games. The U17s was 2 all, again losing by games leaving it all down to the U19 age groups. The girls finished with one win and one loss, leaving the result up to the last two matches of the day. With all players trying so hard and playing their best throughout, the U19 boys continued on this vein to both win and take out the title.

Coaches Sue Hillier and Damon MacMillan said ‘The players displayed great sportsmanship on and off the court throughout the event. They took on the challenge from all States and came away with a well-deserved win.”
