Great Southern Sports Talent Association (GSSTA): Performance Psychology

30th March 2019, Albany

Story by Luke Cann, WAIS Javelin Scholarship Holder

It was a pleasure to be involved in the Developing Champions workshop for the Great Southern Sports Talent Association on the weekend in Albany. The group of athletes participating in the workshop came from a wide array of sporting disciplines. All athletes were all thrilled to be there bright and early on Sunday morning listening to Adrian and myself present about Performance Psychology and the impacts it can have on both our sporting careers and day to day life.

A main topic which was focused on within the workshop was helping athletes figure out if they have a fixed mindset, growth mindset or a mixture of the 2. And how this impacted their thinking while writing down thoughts that they have had about their respective sports. Adrian and I then challenged the athletes to rethink these thoughts and change them into more of a growth mindset which is more positive and easier for the athletes to achieve.

Overall It was a great weekend working with this young group of athletes through the performance Psych workshop. I wish them all the very best as they too embark on a journey to become the best version of themselves in their sporting and life endeavours.
