Developing Champions Athlete in Focus: Liam Smith - Swimming
18 May 2011

Hi my name is Liam Smith and I swim with Kalamunda Swimming Club. I am an MC swimmer, and was diagnosed with right haemiplegia when I was about 12 months old. This makes the muscles in my body really tight and sometimes they are painful. In the beginning I took up swimming to keep my body in good shape and my muscles relaxed. Later on I started to compete in swimming competitions, and became a member of Wheelchair Sports and competed in Junior Games over East.

I went to a Developing Champions course at Challenge recently and learnt about goal setting and using my time more effectively. I have to admit that fitting it all in, especially in Year 11 can be tricky.

One of my goals at the end of the Long Course season was to have qualified for the Telstra Open National Championships held at Sydney Olympic Park from the 1st to the 8th of April. I achieved this goal and competed in 2 events, the 50m Backstroke and the 100m Freestyle. In the 50m Backstroke I managed to stay on track with my race plan, holding a 36.71, but for the freestyle I went a couple of seconds over finishing on a 1.09. This was because my nerves during and before the race got the better of me. I got stressed out by things that were happening around me and I will have to learn to control this and just focus on my race.

Overall I had the fantastic experience in being at the Telstra Opens and I will be thrilled to compete there next year. Also I will be looking to strive toward my oncoming goals this year in competing at MC Age Nationals in Canberra and hopefully achieve my passionate dreams in the upcoming years ahead, which is to study Biology and compete in the 2016 Paralympic games.

This is me above the Main pool at Sydney.
